How to check a lottery ticket without getting it wrong

A careful, step-by-step method for comparing a ticket with a published result, and the common slips that cause false hope or missed prizes.

Start with the draw date, not the latest result

Most checking mistakes happen before a single number is compared. Tickets are valid for a specific draw, and many people play several draws in advance. Read the draw date printed on the ticket and find the result for that exact date.

If your ticket covers several draws, check each one separately. A match on one draw tells you nothing about the others.

Compare main numbers and extra numbers separately

Every game draws a main set and, in most cases, a separate extra set: Lucky Stars, a Thunderball, a Life Ball or a Bonus Ball. Count main matches first, then extra matches. Never mix the two groups, because a number appearing as a Lucky Star does not count as a main match.

Lotto's Bonus Ball comes from the remaining main-pool balls. Its role depends on the applicable prize rules; it is not a seventh selection on an ordinary six-number ticket. Keep separately labelled rounds apart.

HotPicks works differently

Lotto HotPicks and EuroMillions HotPicks have no separate draw. You choose to play between one and five numbers, and all of your chosen numbers must appear among the main numbers of the underlying draw. Matching three out of four is not a smaller prize; it is no prize for that line.

Use a checker as a second pair of eyes

Our checker compares your numbers against a confirmed draw we hold and shows each match. It does not decide whether you have won or how much, because prize tiers, rollovers and rule changes are the operator's business.

Always confirm with the operator

Before telling anyone or making plans, check the ticket with the official retailer terminal, app or website. The operator's result is the only one that counts for a claim.

Putting this guide into practice

Work through a multi-line entry systematically

Use the original ticket or operator account record rather than a remembered line. First identify every covered date, then compare each full line for that date. Marking down which lines you have already checked can prevent the same entry being counted twice. Do not discard a ticket after looking at only its first line or first draw. An independent checker cannot know which other entries are printed elsewhere on the receipt.

Check the round and the actual ticket product

Current Lotto records can contain Round 1 and Round 2. Keep the numbers from those rounds separate and use the round relevant to the entry. HotPicks requires its own Pick option and excludes extra balls. A normal Lotto ticket is not automatically a Lotto HotPicks entry, and EuroMillions Lucky Stars do not complete a HotPicks selection. Where the product rules are unclear, ask the issuer rather than adapting the comparison until it appears to match.

Know when to stop the informal check

Once a line appears to match, return to the official service for confirmation. Do not assume a screenshot proves purchase, ownership or entitlement. Additional codes and optional ticket features may have their own results, and claim deadlines are separate from whether an old record is still online. Keep the ticket safe and do not reveal a full barcode in a public post. LotteryUK never asks for a release payment to validate a prize.

A final check for UK readers

Use this explanation alongside the original entry and the operator’s current information, not instead of them. The same game name can appear on different products, and an overseas draw can use a different local date from the one in Britain. An apparent match on an independent website is not evidence of purchase or a payment guarantee. Keep relevant receipts safe, avoid sharing sensitive ticket details and seek official confirmation before making plans based on a possible prize.

Frequently asked questions

Can I combine matches from several lines?

No. A line is assessed as its own set of selections. Three matches on one line and three on another do not create a six-number match. The same separation applies to different draw dates and labelled rounds.

Does the checker decide which prize tier applies?

No. It identifies number matches against a saved result. Eligibility, ticket validity, extra features and payment belong to the operator’s process. A highlighted number is not an instruction to pay a prize.

What should I do if a draw is missing?

Use the official operator’s dated result. Do not substitute the latest draw, the closest available date or another game with a similar layout. An absent record describes our coverage, not the outcome of your entry.
